I'm really sorry if this is a totally dumb question, but I'm trying to change the screensaver on my Kindle. I started with the HTG article on this topic, which seemed straight forward enough..until he said blithely to extract the bin file to the root directory.
Extract..gee..7zip wasn't helping. So..I tried searching HTG for extracting a .bin file and found the article on 'mounting' a bin file and virtual clone driver. I've installed VCD. I've shot the file over to the root directory. I've double clicked. I've right clicked and chosen 'mount'..and nothing happens as far as I can tell. Certainly nothing indicating any kind of 'extraction'. The computer won't give up the kindle, claiming a program is still accessing it. I waited and waited. Finally, I restarted the computer, got the kindle released..and the 'update' option in the Kindle is still gray.
I consider myself fairly computer savvy..have been building my own for almost 20 years..but I've just never dealt with bin files. The explanation seems so straight forward, but it's not working.
I have a 64 bit win7 HP laptop (pavilion DV7) and a Kindle2. (what can I say..I'm an author. I can't afford a fancy one! :D :D :D)
What, please, am I doing wrong?
You can extract a .bin file with any iso extractor. One to try is isobuster, works well for me.
Thanks..I'd as soon not buy something for a single project that s/b (from the article) very simple. 7zip claims it extracts iso, but it gives me the following error:
Can not open file ..update_jailbreak_0.6.N_k2?install.bin' as archive
I don't really understand the error msg. I don't know what 'archive' has to do with the unzip process. Never had a problem..ever..with unzipping a file so am rather at a loss.

Extractor wanted .. goodness..another file other than the bin file. I've forgotten now. Getting old..
OTOH.After all that..EXTRACTION was never an issue. Evidently all you need to do is put the .bin file onto the kindle and the update option should show up. It didn't, even tho I had the correct version. I went to mobileread, found a different download of the cracker and voila! it worked!
